A Creature Was Stirring …
… and it was a mouse. On this day in 1929, the first talking Mickey Mouse cartoon was released, which reminds us of perhaps Mickey’s most famous film appearance: as the sorcerer’s apprentice in Disney’s Fantasia, set to the eponymous work by Dukas. He may be speechless here, but it’s no less thrilling to watch those brooms multiply and come back to life.
The Philharmonic plunges into this piece on a program that also features Stravinsky’s enchanting Firebird Suite, which factored into Fantasia 2000, June 13–18. Fortunately, no bucket is required.
